Last week in Karnataka, a troubling incident unfolded as a young boy fell sick after consuming what are commonly referred to as “smoke biscuits” from a shop in Davanagere city. Subsequently, authorities revoked the shop owner’s license due to the biscuits being made with liquid nitrogen, leading to the prompt closure of the shop.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video circulated online, depicting the boy consuming the biscuits served by a street food vendor at an exhibition. Shared on X (formerly Twitter), the footage shows the vendor serving the dish in a disposable cup.
In the video, the child’s discomfort is evident as he immediately spits out the liquid after taking a sip, eventually collapsing unconscious. Accompanying text with the clip describes the incident as taking place at an exhibition near Aruna Talkies in Davangere, cautioning about the dangers of liquid nitrogen turning into ice upon ingestion.

What are smoke biscuits exactly?
These biscuits are crafted using liquid nitrogen, a substance commonly utilized as a coolant, yet posing severe risks if ingested directly. Liquid nitrogen, with temperatures plummeting to -196 degrees Celsius, can lead to serious injuries affecting the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach.
It’s crucial to differentiate between liquid nitrogen and dry ice, as both substances can cause harm. Both emit thick white vapors when exposed to room temperature and are frequently utilized in food preparation and preservation as freezing agents. However, neither should be directly consumed or applied to the skin due to potential health hazards such as skin allergies, mouth burns, stomach discomfort, and more.
