Jaipur: Usman Ghani, former district president of the BJP minority morcha, was detained by the Bikaner police in Rajasthan on Saturday for alleged ‘breach of peace’ and placed under preventive custody, according to officials.
Ghani gained attention recently after a video of him criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements at a Banswara rally surfaced on social media. Consequently, the BJP expelled Ghani from the party.
The Bikaner police stated that Ghani’s detention was prompted by his alleged misbehavior and confrontation with police officials at the Mukta Prasad Nagar police station.
“A few days ago, a police vehicle visited his residence to ensure his well-being and safety following the criticism and reactions to his statements. Today, Ghani visited the police station and questioned the purpose of the earlier visit. When informed that it was a routine check, Ghani allegedly behaved inappropriately and engaged in a confrontation with the police. We detained him under section 151 CrPC to prevent any potential cognizable offense,” said Dhirendra Shekhawat, SHO of Mukta Prasad Nagar police station.
In an interview with News24, Ghani expressed disappointment with Modi’s remarks in Banswara. As a Muslim member of the BJP, he mentioned being questioned by the Muslim community during his campaign. Modi’s comments garnered criticism from opposition parties.
