Bengaluru: Around one hundred citizens and members of the Solid Waste Management Round Table staged a protest at Town Hall on Sunday againstgarbage mafia. They claimed the garbage mafia had paralysed waste collection in the city.

Sandhya Narayan, a member of the round table, said their protest was against a section of garbage contractors who were exerting political pressure to stop measures to improve transparency. “We are only against those who participate in this nexus and indulge in corruption. We want such contractors to be blacklisted so that they don’t keep coming back to the system,” said Narayan.

The protesters pointed out that simple moves such as equipping vehicles with GPS and implementing biometric attendance for conservancy workers could bring transparency in garbage collection and payment of wages to conservancy workers, but both have been delayed indefinitely owing to pressure from a section of garbage contractors.
