Bengaluru: People living in Cauvery basin in the State are all anxious today as the Supreme Court will be hearing Karnataka’s arguments on the water sharing issue on Monday, September 5. The State will be yet again conveying its inability to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Earlier on Friday, the Supreme Court had asked Karnataka to consider taking steps to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is demanding release of 50 tmc ft of water from Cauvery.
Karnataka Water Resources minister, MB Patil speaking on the issue said on Sunday that Karnataka’s council led by FS Nariman would present the distress being experienced by Karnataka to release the water due to poor monsoon and low storage in Cauvery basin reservoirs. The total available water in four reservoirs in Cauvery basin is just about 50 tmc ft and about 40 tmc ft of it would be required to meet the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and other towns, he said.
