In response to the escalating water scarcity in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has introduced a mandatory requirement for the installation of aerators in taps for bulk users by March 31. This measure aims to curb water wastage and promote conservation efforts amid the ongoing crisis.

Aerators, designed to regulate water flow from taps, will now be compulsory for apartments, commercial establishments, industries, luxury hotels, restaurants, and public spaces. BWSSB Chairman V Ram Prasath Manohar emphasized the importance of this initiative, urging voluntary compliance from all households as well.

The implementation timeline includes a voluntary 10-day window from March 21 to 31 for aerator installation. Post the March 31 deadline, BWSSB will oversee installations in establishments where aerators haven’t been fitted. Accredited plumbers will conduct these installations, with expenses covered by establishment owners.

The official order, effective from March 20, mandates aerator installation for all taps designated for cleaning purposes, including those in handwashing sinks, toilets, and public areas like malls, restaurants, and offices.

Manohar highlighted aerators’ role in water conservation, emphasizing potential savings of 60-85%. He encouraged homeowners to adopt aerators, citing their affordability and significant reduction in water consumption and bills.

Drawing parallels to pandemic precautions, Manohar likened aerators to ‘water tap masks,’ stressing their essential role in conserving water during the crisis. Plans include training 1,500 licensed plumbers from March 20 to promote awareness and facilitate aerator installations.

Aerator installation has already commenced at BWSSB’s headquarters, with mandatory enforcement set to begin from March 21 onwards. Manohar reiterated the collective effort required to promote water-efficient practices and ensure sustainable water management in Bengaluru.
