Blast at HAL staff quarters triggers panic

Bengaluru: An explosion, suspected to have been triggered by unused gelatin sticks at HAL premises in Lal Bahadur Shastri Nagar on Tuesday evening sent panic waves among the residents.

Panicked residents rushed out of their homes on hearing the blast to find that a portion of the earth, being used as a dumping yard had caved in. A water tank nearby the blast spot too had been damaged due to the impact of the blast.

Police officials along with the bomb detection and disposal squad rushed to the spot to investigate the blast. Preliminary police investigation revealed that the gelatin sticks had been used to blast rocks in order to lay the foundation for a residential quarter here. Few unused gelatin sticks had been left behind by workers at the spot and the same exploded when it came in contact with a fire lit to burn garbage.

No casualties were reported in the incident.
