Bengaluru: Police are always there to lend support especially to those who are vulnerable. Over the years, various law enforcement divisions have come up with various cells to deal with specific issues, especially those relating to women’s safety. The internet being what it is, making it easier to get connected and stay connected, it makes the spread of information about these cells and their services much easier.

But, with things being the way they are, it is easy for misinformation also to be spread just as easily. Recently a WhatsApp message saying, “Bengaluru city police. Started a good service with a dedicated helpline for women. Before boarding the taxi or auto, sms the Vehicle Number to +919969777888. You will get an acknowledgment via sms. Vehicle will be tracked via GPRS. Share with as many as you can… Help your sister, mom, your wife and female friends…” has been doing the rounds.

Lucky for us the Bengaluru city police (BCP), through their Twitter handle, was kind enough to bring to the people’s attention that the message is fake.

The BCP’s tweet read: “Fake message is floating on Whatsapp regarding this number as BCP’s Women Helpline. The number does not belong to BCP. People are requested not to believe or share this fake message. Stringent action will be taken against those who create and spread fake messages on social media.”

A word to the wise, please verify any helpline number you come across before sharing it. You never know, it could save someone’s life.
