Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has undertaken a comprehensive pre-monsoon drainage cleaning initiative to address concerns regarding flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. ThisĀ approach follows previous instances where the city’s infrastructure faced challenges during heavy rainfall.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath addressed the media, outlining the department’s efforts. He acknowledged, “The BBMP recognizes the anxieties of Bengaluru’s residents pertaining to potential flooding during the monsoon. To that end, we have implemented a proactive strategy to boost our preparedness.”
The centerpiece of this initiative is an intensive desilting and cleaning drive targeting the city’s drainage network. “As of today, nearly 75% of storm drains that were previously obstructed by debris have been successfully cleared,” reported Commissioner Girinath. This initiative, initially planned for a two-week period, has been extended until May 10th to ensure maximum coverage.
Recognizing the interconnected nature of Bengaluru’s infrastructure, the BBMP has established communication channels with allied government agencies such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Bescom (electricity distribution company), and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). Through this collaboration, the BBMP aims to minimize disruptions caused by ongoing maintenance works undertaken by these agencies during the monsoon season. A deadline of May 20th has been established for the completion of any debris-clearing tasks that could potentially impede the flow of rainwater.
Furthermore, to ensure prompt response to monsoon-related grievances, the BBMP will be establishing a 24/7 helpline for residents to report issues. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the arrival of the monsoon season with light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. In light of this forecast, the BBMP’s pre-monsoon efforts aim to bolster the city’s resilience in the face of the impending weather conditions.
