Bengaluru: A day after one of the convicts managed to escape from the high security Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, another jail inmate  tried to escape on Saturday evening.

He fled after attacking a head constable escorting him to NIMHANS hospital in South Bengaluru for treatment.

The jail inmate has been identified as Anand Kumar, 32, of Malur in Kolar district and presently lodged at the prison. He was being brought to NIMHANS to undergo treatment at 4.30 PM on Saturday. As soon as he entered the hospital premises Anand Kumar bit the head constable Muniswamy to get himself released from his grip and threw chilli powder and pulled out a knife and slashed Muniswamy’s face repeatedly before escaping.

Muniswamy, who started bleeding raised alarm for help, following passers-by with the help of few policemen present at the campus chased and caught him down before he was handed over to the Siddapur police.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Alok Kumar said that the prisoner has been detained by the Siddapur police for questioning to ascertain the source of knife and chilli powder and other details. A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 353 (obstructing public servant from performing his duty) has been registered against him and further investigations are underway.

Deputy Commissioner of police (South division) said that Anand Kumar was jailed since 2008 after he was arrested in connection with murder case in Malur. He was convicted and penalized with life time imprisonment. He was  serving his sentence in the central prison. On Saturday around 3 pm he started to complain heavy headache. The jail authority sent him to Nimhans hospital for treatment with security. But, he tried to escape from the clutches of police and his efforts went in vain.

Another inmate identified as Manjunath, who was serving a life term in the jail walked away along with the visitors on Friday at same prison.
