
Belagavi: The spate of poor performances in PUC examinations in Belagavi district continued with only 54.28 percent students of the district making the cut in the PUC results announced on April 30. Belagavi educational district stood 29th in the state while Chikkodi educational district came last in the state with 52.2 pass percentage and 32nd position.
Year on year, the educational performance has been falling in Belagavi. In 2016, Belagavi stood 16th with 62.5 passing percentage in the PUC exam. The rank dropped to 28th in 2017 with only 44.25 pass percentage. This year Belagavi has slipped by one rank to the 29th position even though it has seen marginal increase in its pass percentage to 54.28 percent.
From this year, Chikkodi was separated from Belagavi as an independent educational district for the PUC examinations. This educational district boasts of securing top 5 ranks in SSLC examinations in the state. However, it has the worst pass percentage in Karnataka in PUC. This shocker of a results has people wondering about the stark contrast between the SSLC and PUC performance.
Exam statistics
From the Belagavi educational district, 18,731 fresh students appeared for the PU examinations and 10,168 qualified. In the science stream 60.11 percent, commerce stream 60.11 percent and in arts 41.35 percent students passed the PU examinations.
Similarly in Chikkodi, out of the 21,969 students who appeared for the examinations, only 11,467 managed to pass. The pass percentage was 61.9 percent for science stream, 60.09 percent for commerce and 39.23 percent for arts.
The mediocre results in the arts stream in both the districts seem to have dragged the performance lower for these districts.
Rural students fared better in comparison to their urban counterparts in Belagavi educational district. Out of the 13,977 rural students, 7,762 (55.23 percent) students cleared the examination whereas only 2406 urban students (50.61 percent) out of 4754 urban students 2406 (50.61 percent) students passed the exam.
