Dharwad: The farmers of Navalgund who have been protesting since two years seeking an early implementation of Kalasa Banduri Nala project, besides solving some of the burning issues faced by them, have now submitted a memorandum seeking consent of the President for mass euthanasia.

The farmers who staged a protest in front of the district administration later submitted their memorandum addressed to President of India seeking permission for euthanasia for 500 farmers.

The protesters stated that the lives of farmers has become miserable at the hands of the government and the crop insurance companies, as they remain indifferent to their problems.
The crops grown in kharif and rabi season have been completely lost following drought condition specially in Navalgund taluk. The investment made by farmers for raising crops has gone waste. Adding to their woes, the crop insurance companies too have not paid scientific compensation to those who have incurred crop loss, they alleged.

In total the farmers had paid crop insurance premium to the tune of Rs. 10.21 crore, but the compensation released is in just a few lakhs of rupees. The government has followed uniform crop compensation pattern which has resulted in more loss to the genuine crop losers they said.

While demanding for the early implementation of Kalasa Banduri Nala project to end the water crisis in the region, the farmers said if the authorities continued their negligent attitude towards their legitimate demand, they will be forced to seek mass euthanasia from President of India.

Lokanath Hebsur, Veeranna Malagi and others were present when the memorandum was submitted.
