Dharwad: A North Karnataka based conglomeration of organisations supporting the struggles of the farmers across the country, has sent a memorandum to the Union Agricultural Minister Radha Mohan Singh asking him to implement the long-pending report of Swaminathan Commission.

The organisations said proportion of Indian population directly engaged in agriculture, or dependent on agriculture through associated occupations, is very large; and they contribute very significantly to the social stability and peace by producing food grains for us. The neglect and apathy shown by successive governments have driven them to take the path of suicide, also compelling them to take to the streets, they added.

“Despite the on-going agitation, several of the ministers and officers have made offensive comments about the intentions of the agitating farmers. No FIRs have been filed against the individuals responsible for death of the farmers in police firing in Madhya Pradesh. This tragic situation calls for immediate implementation of report of the Swaminathan Commission”, they said.

They also demanded the loan waivers for farmers besides appealing the minister not to neglect this vital sector of country’s economy.

Organisations such as Dakshinayana, Karnataka; Karnatak Vidya Vardhak Sangh, Dharwad; AISF, Hubli Dharwad; SFI, Dharwad District; Karnataka Janasahitya Sanghatane, Dharwad; Insurance Employees’ Union, Dharwad Division; Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, Dharwad District and Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Dharwad District among others have signed the memorandum.
