New Delhi: Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi “followed” Seemantini Bose on Twitter, her account was hacked and used to post demeaning messages about her close friends. What’s more? They even sent direct messages (DM) to the PM’s account.

Bose (36), a resident of Kolkata, told India Today how she started receiving one-time passwords (OTPs) via text messages at around 2 AM, to help her log in to her Twitter account. This occurred while she was scrolling through her Twitter feed mere hours after being followed by the Prime Minister’s personal Twitter account, @narendramodi.

What she found suspicious was that the OTPs were being received even though she was not making any attempts to log in to her account. While this was going on, she received an email informing her that there has been a recent log in on her Twitter account.

Through the email, she found out that her account was logged in from an Android device in Lahore, Pakistan. Bose, however, said that the location could have been false as device locations can be faked.

Shortly thereafter, Bose was locked out and her account “disappeared” from her phone. “I was unable to log in,” she told India Today.

The hacker posted several tweets, one of which tagged the PM and one of Bose’s friends, alleging that she was being harassed by said friend.

A DM was also sent to PM Modi saying, “Sir, you have brought shame to India by locking up Kashmiris for 43 days now. Please lift the curfew.”

Bose called up her friends and also contacted Twitter Support to get them to restore her account to her. Her friends started posting on her behalf, explaining that her account had been hacked.

After she regained control of her account in the morning, Bose realised the extent to which the hacker had gone. To repair the damage, she sent out a series of tweets explaining what had happened.
