As Congress scion Rahul Gandhi filed nomination from Rae Bareli, dropping Amethi, Union Minister and BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani, stated that the Congress had conceded defeat in Amethi even before the elections began.
Irani commented on the Congress fielding Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi instead of Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that it indicated their acknowledgment of imminent defeat.
With BJP projecting a clear victory for Irani in Amethi, she has gained significant local recognition, evidenced by her establishment of a residence in Gauriganj. With three of the five assembly seats in Amethi held by BJP and one by SP MLA Rakesh Kumar Singh, who supports Irani, Amethi is now perceived as a BJP stronghold rather than a Gandhi stronghold.
Senior BJP figures interpreted the Gandhis’ decision not to contest from Amethi as a sign of their reluctance to engage in a challenging battle, leaving voters disillusioned.
