Jammu: A fierce encounter is on since morning at Jammu’s Kathua district after a group of terrorists stormed the Rajbagh police station, around 15 km from the border. A policeman, civilian and a terrorist have been killed.
The group, dressed in army fatigues, had come around 6 am in an auto-rickshaw, said sources. They had commandeered the vehicle, the driver is suspected to have died.
On their way in, the terrorists shot the police sentry at the gate. Currently they are holed up inside the building, sources said. Around 6 policemen are also inside the building, but on a different floor.
Additional troops have been rushed to the spot and heavy exchange of fire is on. The National Highway has been closed to vehicles.
This is first terror attack in the state since the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government took charge earlier this month.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has already spoken to the Director General of Police and has asked the Home Secretary to monitor the situation.
Sources say the attackers could be infiltrators who may have crossed the border last night.
“India took the initiative to talk to Pakistan. We did not even reach a conclusion and the firing happened. Pakistan is a habitual backstabber. Pakistan needs to know that friendship and terror cannot go together,” said senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.
