Hyderabad: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a prohibition against K. Chandrashekhar Rao, the president of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), preventing him from conducting any public gatherings, rallies, events, or interviews, as well as making any “public utterances” in print, electronic, and social media platforms for a period of 48 hours starting from 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The EC expressed strong disapproval of statements made by Rao during a press conference in Sircilla on April 5 and reprimanded him for his misconduct. Consequently, he has been restrained from organizing public meetings and other election-related activities under Article 324 of the Constitution.
The electoral body acted upon a complaint filed by Congress State vice-president G. Niranjan, alleging that Rao violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by making derogatory and objectionable remarks against the party. Rao was quoted as using abusive language against Congress leaders.
Referring to the MCC, the Commission emphasized that criticism of other political parties should be limited to their policies, past record, and work. Parties and candidates are urged to refrain from criticizing aspects of private life unrelated to the public activities of leaders or workers.
