With the resignation of Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday, he gave the excuse of “personal reasons and certain other commitments”.
One day after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, Mr. Purohit tendered his resignation.
“I hereby submit my resignation from the position of Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, and Governor of Punjab, citing personal reasons and other obligations.” In his letter to the President, Mr. Purohit said, “Please accept the same and oblige.”
The resignation follows a bitter and ongoing war of words between the Governor and state Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Last August, Mr Purohit sent a letter to the Chief Minister, warning him that he could recommend President’s rule in the state and also initiate criminal proceedings if his letters are not answered.
In the most recent correspondence with Mr. Mann, Governor Purohit restated that he had received no response from him regarding his earlier correspondence and forewarned him that he might submit a report to the President regarding the “failure of constitutional mechanism.”
In response to the letter, Mr. Mann stated that the Governor had “threatened the peace-loving people” of the state, highlighting the absolute control over law and order.
