Meerut: A video of a female student getting whacked by a female police constable has gone viral. At first sight, this incident looks like a mere case of police brutality, however, when you add context to the video, an ugly truth comes to the fore.

In the video in question, the female police constable is hitting the female student, whose face is covered with a cloth so as to hide her identity, for visiting a Muslim man’s house. The female officer is heard mocking the girl for her choice of a Muslim man when there are plenty of Hindu men around.

The incident as seen in the video, took place on September 23, when a 20-year-old nursing student at Sardar Vallabhbhai University, Meerut visited the home of her 22-year-old male Muslim classmate in Jagriti Vihar. Some of the residents barged into the man’s house with members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) who assaulted the two students, claiming that they found them in an intimate position.

The video was taken when the members of the VHP handed the two over to the police, with three constables and one member of the Home Guard. The two students were then detained for a long period of time.

The incident has left many anxious and angry at the thought that the very people who have been appointed to uphold the law, are openly and blatantly violating it.

Following the incident and the subsequent outcry, the three constables seen in the video have been suspended and an enquiry has been initiated with regard to the Home Guard.

Police have stated that the parents of both the students have not contacted them.

Nageshwar Sharma, administrative officer of the nursing college has complained that both the students as well as he, are under immense pressure as a lot of reporters are calling him trying to find out if the female student is being pulled out of the course by her parents.

Taking the student’s side, he said that they both study at a co-education institute and that it is not possible to prevent students from interacting with each other. He then wished that the two students would resume classes as soon as possible.
