PM Inaugurates Key Phase: Dwarka Expressway Eases Delhi-Gurugram Travel

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Haryana segment of the significant Dwarka Expressway, aiming to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion between Delhi and Gurugram on NH-48.

Additionally, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari presented gifts to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, PM inspected the 4 Level-Interchange of the Haryana Section of the Dwarka Expressway.

In a post on X, PM Modi expressed, “Today marks a pivotal moment for connectivity across India. Around 12 noon today, 112 National Highways, spanning various states, will be dedicated to the nation or their foundation stones would be laid. The inauguration of the Haryana Section of Dwarka Expressway is a significant part of this. These initiatives will stimulate economic growth and align with our endeavors to develop next-generation infrastructure.”

 How will commuters benefit from this development?

  • The 19 km stretch of the Dwarka Expressway in Haryana was constructed at an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 4,100 crore. This section consists of two segments: the first covering a 10.2 km stretch from Delhi-Haryana Border to Basai Rail-over-Bridge (ROB), and the second spanning an 8.7 km distance from Basai ROB to Kherki Daula.
  • The third and fourth sections cover approximately 19 km in Gurugram, while the first two segments, totaling 10 km, are located in Delhi. Commencing from Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, it traverses through Dwarka Sector 21, the Gurugram border, Basai, and concludes near Kherki Daula on the national highway.
  • The Expressway represents a fully access-controlled, grade-separated 14-lane corridor, a pioneering initiative in India. It incorporates four multi-level interchanges, integrating tunnels or underpasses, ground-level road sections, and elevated flyovers.
  • A noteworthy feature includes an 8-lane elevated structure alongside India’s first 4 km long 8-lane tunnel near IGI airport, referred to as a ‘shallow tunnel’ due to its less intrusive construction method, as reported by Times of India. The starting point of the Expressway includes an interchange with two underpasses beneath NH 48, serving over 3 lakh vehicles daily, with the aim of mitigating traffic congestion and reducing vehicular pollution in the Delhi NCR region.
  • Importantly, this expressway will provide direct connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and the Gurugram Bypass, enhancing transportation efficiency in the region.
