New Delhi: BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned as a member of the Rajya Sabha, an official said.
“Navjot Singh Sidhu, nominated member, resigns from Rajya Sabha,” Gurdeep Singh Sappal, OSD to the Vice President Hamid Ansari tweeted on Monday.
The former cricketer and popular commentator was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in April. There is a strong, though unconfirmed, buzz that the 52-year-old is drifting towards Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is prepping to campaign aggressively for the Punjab election next year. Some reports suggest that Sidhu could be AAP’s chief ministerial candidate.
Sidhu had been upset with the BJP when he was asked to make way for Arun Jaitley to fight from his constituency Amritsar during the 2014 national election. He had represented the Amritsar constituency for 10 years. Jaitley lost the election.
