New Delhi:  Booked a flight ticket and want to cancel it? Well, with the new host of delightful measures brought in by the Civil Aviation Ministry, air passengers henceforth need not worry about the cancellation charges.
The measures including cap cancellation charges not exceeding the basic fare, decrease in the free baggage limit etc, which have been proposed by the Ministry, if implemented, will empower passengers travelling by air.

The measures propose that even the Airport development fees levied in many airport like Delhi’s IGI Airport has to be returned to the passenger as well in event of cancellations.

What More

The Ministry states that if the airlines deny boarding to passengers despite valid ticket due to overbooking and if the airline fails to organise another flight in next one hour, the airline will have to compensate the passenger with a whopping 200% of one way basic fare and airline fuel charge.  And if the erring airline fails to arrange an alternate flight within 24 hours the compensation charge will be an even steeper 400%.

Dealing with the issue of extra baggage, an area which the airlines have been vouching to either decrease the quantity or even abolish, the Ministry has kept a mandatory 15 kg free baggage that a passenger can carry. And if the baggage is anything between 15 to 20 kgs, the passenger will only have to shell out a mere Rs 100 per extra kg. Though after 20 kgs of baggage, airline is free to charge the way they want.

The Ministry has also spoke at length about the mechanism that should be put in place to handle delays in airlines due to technical glitches.

Airlines are also expected to be disabled friendly and accommodating to person with reduced mobility.
