Former Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi passed away early Friday morning at the age of 86 due to complications related to his age. Joy Chakravarty, the chief operating officer of P D Hinduja Hospital, confirmed the news.

Joshi had been admitted to the ICU of the hospital and was under observation after experiencing cardiac issues on Wednesday. He had been battling prolonged age-related health problems. His last rites will be performed at the Shivaji Park crematorium after his mortal remains are brought to his residence in Matunga.

Joshi’s health had been fragile since May 2023 when he suffered a brain hemorrhage. Following the incident, he was hospitalized and remained in a semi-conscious state for a few days. Despite efforts, doctors saw little hope of recovery, and he was eventually moved to his Shivaji Park home for care.

Born on December 2, 1937, in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in Mumbai.

His political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and later he became associated with the Shiv Sena. Joshi rose as a prominent leader within the party in the 1980s, known for his organizational skills and grassroots connections.

Joshi’s most significant political milestone was becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1995, succeeding Sharad Pawar of the Indian National Congress. This marked the first time the Shiv Sena had assumed power in the state. He also served as a Member of Parliament and as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 during the Vajpayee government.

Known for his managerial skills and grassroots connect, Joshi’s journey from poverty in Nandvi village of Raigad district to political prominence was remarkable. He played a pivotal role in expanding the Shiv Sena across Maharashtra alongside Bal Thackeray.

His contribution to skill development through the establishment of the Kohinoor Technical Institute earned him the title “Sir” among students and staff, reflecting his commitment to upliftment.

Joshi’s tenure as Chief Minister saw significant initiatives, including the slum rehabilitation scheme aimed at providing better living conditions for the underprivileged.

His close association with Mumbai city and understanding of development issues helped him champion the cause of the city during his political career.

Joshi’s alliance with the BJP, particularly his understanding with Pramod Mahajan, played a crucial role in Maharashtra’s political landscape. Despite occasional rifts, his leadership helped in resolving conflicts within the alliance.

Overall, Manohar Joshi’s legacy in Maharashtra politics remains significant, marked by his dedication to the welfare of the people and his contributions to the development of the state.
