A 38-year-old man was charged on Sunday with killing his wife inside their Malabar Hill home by slicing her throat. According to the police, the accused hurried his sick wife to the hospital on Saturday but gave false information to the authorities, saying that she fell down the stairs and got hurt.

However, the man was jailed and his 62-year-old mother was taken into custody on suspicion of destroying evidence shortly after the autopsy was completed.Anjali Vardham, who was residing at Shimla Nagar in Malabar Hill with her husband Ajay, their 14-year-old son, and mother-in-law Asha, has been identified as the deceased, according to police sources.

The accused allegedly went back home from work on Saturday between 10 and 10.30 p.m., according to the authorities. A police officer stated, “Ajay is into repairing work and when he returned home, he was under the influence of alcohol.”

After Ajay and Vardham got into a heated argument, the accused allegedly took a knife to Ajay’s throat in a fit of rage, according to the police. She began to bleed, and the accused hurried her to Bhatia hospital out of fear. There, he repeatedly altered his account of the injury’s cause. “He informed the hospital’s authorities that she had been hurt when she fell down the stairway. However, Ajay left the hospital shortly after it was announced that she had passed away around midnight, said an investigator.

Following their notification, the Malabar Hill police filed an accidental death report because they were unsure of the nature of the injuries. Nonetheless, a postmortem was carried out since the medical professionals and law enforcement suspected foul play. According to the initial postmortem assessment, she may have been stabbed. When we asked their son about it, he informed us that his parents had regular arguments. And there was a similar altercation on Saturday night, in which his father killed her,” a police officer reported.

Asha was taken into custody after the police filed a murder and evidence destruction case late on Sunday. “We’re still looking for Ajay. He will shortly be found and taken into custody, an officer stated.

The police further stated that Ajay had beaten his wife with a hammer during the pandemic in 2020, but she had survived with a head injury, and the incident had never been reported to the authorities.
