The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday published a list of 188 hazardous, decaying buildings in anticipation of the impending monsoon season. According to the PTI, the BMC published a list of 188 residential structures that are in “dilapidated” and “very dangerous” conditions.

As a precaution, the Mumbai municipal council has urged residents of such buildings to relocate to safer areas.

The tallest 114 buildings on the list, out of the 188 total, are located in the western suburbs, followed by the eastern suburbs with 47 and 27 buildings in the island city, according to the PTI.

It stated that in accordance with section 354 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, the buildings had been deemed “very dangerous and dilapidated.”

The civic council has ordered the concerned authorities who own these structures to take the necessary actions before monsoon, in addition to pleading with the public to leave these run-down buildings.

The list was made public by the civic body on its website, www.mcgm.gov.in.

The release stated that every private building owner or occupant that has been in operation for more than 30 years is required by section 353B of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, to conduct a structural audit of their building and submit a structural stability certificate to the civic body within 30 days, according to PTI.

According to the news agency on Tuesday, the civic authority has also threatened to take legal action against owners, occupiers, and cooperative organizations who disobey its orders.

Meanwhile, the PTI had reported last month that the BMC has cut 22,334 huge and potentially hazardous tree branches in Mumbai ahead of the monsoon season.

According to a release, the Mumbai civic body has also sent notices to 4,909 establishments in government- and privately-owned areas to trim their trees.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that, in anticipation of the monsoon, the Garden Department has started the methodical and scientific clipping of branches from large and dangerous trees, as reported by the PTI.

About 29.75 lakh trees in Mumbai are under the control of the BMC; of these, 10, 67,641 are on government property and 15, 51,132 are on private properties.

“Of the 1,862,246 trees lining the roadside, 1,13,534 required trimming and a total of 22,334 trees had already been pruned by April 19, while the pruning of the remaining trees will be completed by June 7,” according to the announcement.

In order to address safety issues, the local authority of Mumbai has also removed 386 of the 433 dead, infested, or twisted trees.

It claimed that cars parked by roadsides are impeding the work of tree trimming and asked people to help by moving their cars.
