Pune (Maharashtra): Baba Siddiqui, a former Maharashtra minister who tendered his resignation from the Congress party on Thursday, is set to align with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday, according to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Pawar also indicated that additional leaders will be joining the NCP on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Deputy CM stated, “Baba Siddique will officially join the NCP on the evening of February 10, and on February 11, several others are expected to follow suit.”
Following his departure from the Congress party, Siddiqui expressed his rationale, citing a feeling of being ‘not needed’ within the party anymore.
“I made a decision based on the realization that despite repeated attempts to contribute, if there’s no recognition, it’s time to move forward,” stated Baba Siddique.
Having been associated with the Congress for 48 years, Siddique’s departure prompted criticism from Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Eknath Gaikwad, who asserted that his exit wouldn’t hamper the party’s strength.
“People are shifting political allegiances frequently. Siddique’s decision appears driven by self-interest. However, in Congress, our foundation is rooted in enduring ideals. The party will persist and grow stronger,” remarked Gaikwad.
Siddique boasts a political career spanning three consecutive terms as an MLA from 1999 to 2009, alongside stints as a minister of state and municipal corporator. He has also held significant roles within the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee and the parliamentary board of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
