Along with Surat, Indore was named the cleanest city in India once more at the “Swachh Survekshan Awards,” which were given out on Thursday by President Draupadi Murmu. For the seventh time, Indore has taken home the title of India’s cleanest city.

For the seventh consecutive year, Indore has won the title of cleanest city. This award is dedicated to Lord Ram and was made possible by the tireless efforts of Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP CM Mohan Yadav, workers, and officials in Indore. I congratulate each and every one of you. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava of Indore stated, “Indore has now emerged as a global model.

Shivraj Singh Chauhan, a former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, also congratulated the Indore community on their accomplishment.

While Navi Mumbai bagged the third spot, Saswad in Maharashtra got the cleanest city award for urban centres with less than 1 lakh population. Chhattisgarh’s Patan and Maharashtra’s Lonavla came second and third respectively in this category. Varanasi and Prayagraj were declared the cleanest Ganga Towns.

How did  Indore Manage to Bag Award for the Cleanest City for the Seventh Time?

Indore exercises a complete ban on single-use plastic which has significantly reduced waste generation over a period of time.

Garbage Collection

According to Indore Municipal Corporation’s (IMC) consultant for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Amit Dubey, the “3 R” (reduce, reuse, and recycle) centers, cloth bag and utensil “banks,” parks created using reusable items made from waste materials, and home composting units have all significantly contributed to the city’s waste reduction efforts.

IMC representatives estimate that every day, 692 tons of wet waste, 683 tons of dry waste, and 179 tons of plastic waste are collected in the city under various headings. At the doorsteps, waste from city households is collected after being divided into six categories.

To collect this garbage, around 850 specially-designed vehicles having different compartments for bio-waste items like diapers and sanitary napkins run across the city every day.

Waste Management

“A sustainable system of garbage collection, processing and disposal has been developed in Indore. The city’s consecutive success in the National Cleanliness Survey is based on this strong foundation,” Dubey was quoted by PTI as saying.

Biofuel

On 15 acres of land at the Devguradiya trenching ground, a company in the city operates a “Gobar-Dhan” plant under a public-private partnership (PPP). According to officials, it can process 550 tonnes of wet waste per day, such as leftover fruits, vegetables, and raw meat, to create 17,000–18,000 kg of bio-CNG and 100 tonnes of organic fertilizers.

At a price of Rs 5 per kilogram, which is less than the going rate in the market, the municipal corporation purchases the bio-CNG produced at this plant to power 110 city buses.
