Today, in the midst of intense rain and snowfall, an avalanche struck the Sonmarg region in Jammu and Kashmir. In many areas of Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rain has caused landslides. In a dramatic video, a hillside home near the Line of Control in Uri was seen collapsing after being struck by a landslide.
The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was also closed Monday following multiple landslides triggered by rain. The highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was blocked by landslides at Mehar, Gangroo, Mom Passi and Kishtwari Pather in Ramban district, as per a PTI report.
Snowfall in Peer Ki Gali and surrounding areas caused the Mughal road, a detour connecting the districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu with the Shopian district in south Kashmir, to remain closed for a third day, according to officials.
The water level in all of Kashmir’s rivers, lakes, and streams has increased due to the rain that has fallen over the past 72 hours, and the Meteorological (MeT) office announced today that the same conditions will persist for the next 24 hours.
