Kolkota: A group of miscreants allegedly gang-raped a nun at a convent school in Ranaghat, in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police said on Saturday.

According to the district police, the incident occurred inside a school Convent of Jesus and Mary in the early hours of Saturday. About a dozen dacoits forced themselves inside the institution and gang- raped the elderly nun when she tried to resist them. The nun has been admitted to a local hospital and according to doctors, her condition is stable.

The incident evoked strong reactions across the State and political parties in Opposition raised questions on the law and order situation of the State.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D’ Souza. She has ordered a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the matter.

“We have ordered a CID probe for the Ranaghat Convent incident.CID will be examining all aspects to this horrific crime. Swift, strongest action to be taken,” Ms. Banerjee said on social networking site.
