New Delhi: Following objection from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the delay in releasing the final figures of first two phases of the Lok Sabha election by the Election Commission of India, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also raised concerns and wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, asked the panel to explain the six per cent surge from the initial figures that the EC had put out.

In his letter, Yechury highlighted that the EC took 11 days to release the final figures for the first phase and four days for the second phase of the election. He expressed concern over the lack of explanation provided by the ECI for this prolonged delay. Additionally, he stressed the anomaly of a six percent surge between the initial figures and the final tally, which he deemed as unusual and potentially suspicious.

In the interest of upholding transparency and credibility, Yechury urged the Election Commission to address these doubts by providing a detailed breakdown of the initial and final percentages at the state, constituency, and assembly segment levels, along with the corresponding number of votes cast.
