New Delhi: Amid the ongoing dispute between India and the Maldives, opposition leader and Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Fayyaz Ismail, has urged the government to take a firmer stance against racist comments made by individuals holding positions within the government. Ismail emphasized that these comments, targeting India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were isolated opinions that should not tarnish the overall relationship between the two nations.

He expressed concern over the impact of the social media-driven controversy on the people of both countries and stressed the need for the Maldivian government to disassociate itself from such remarks. Ismail acknowledged the historically nurtured relationship between India and the Maldives, emphasizing that a few inflammatory tweets should not overshadow the diplomatic ties forged over time.

Responding to questions about the potential impact on economic ties and Indian tourism revenue for the Maldives, Ismail emphasized that the issue transcends economics and revenue. He underscored the importance of repairing the damage caused by the controversy, calling for stronger statements or actions from the Maldivian government. Ismail also urged restraint from both sides to de-escalate tensions.

Regarding Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to China and the perceived shift in engagement intensity with different partners, Ismail acknowledged a more favorable relationship between the current government and China. However, he emphasized that maintaining strong relations with India is crucial for the security and stability of the Indian Ocean region.

Ismail concluded by expressing interest in visiting India, particularly Lakshadweep, and highlighted the deep historical and religious roots between the Maldives and Lakshadweep. He encouraged collaborative efforts between the governments and people of both nations for mutual benefit, despite nationalist sentiments.

The ongoing diplomatic row between India and the Maldives stemmed from derogatory remarks made by Maldivian ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Muizzu’s visit to China included discussions on signing key agreements and an appeal for increased Chinese tourist visits to the Maldives, amid the cancellation of reservations by Indian tourists. The Maldivian government has distanced itself from the controversial remarks, emphasizing their unacceptable nature and lack of reflection of the official government position.
