New Delhi: A social media dispute erupted after a Maldives minister criticized India in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to the Lakshadweep archipelago. The visit aimed to boost tourism in the smallest Union Territory, comprising 36 islands spread over 32 sqkm. However, the minister accused India of targeting the Maldives, asserting that India faces challenges competing with the Maldives in beach tourism.
Tensions between India and the Maldives escalated following President Mohamed Muizzu’s election in November 2023. Muizzu, perceived as pro-China, pledged to shift away from the “India first” policy and reduce the presence of Indian military personnel. In contrast to the usual tradition of visiting India first, Muizzu is set to visit China, strengthening ties with the country.
The strained relations prompted a viral response in India, with social media users suggesting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives. The recent Maldivian Vice President’s visit to China and positive remarks on Chinese infrastructure projects underscore the shift towards China’s influence.
While Muizzu and PM Modi had agreed to deepen bilateral ties during a meeting in Dubai in December 2023, the Maldivian President’s call for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel and a review of bilateral agreements raised concerns. The Maldives’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean and its proximity to India emphasize its significance in India’s regional policies, such as SAGAR and the ‘Neighbourhood-First Policy.’
