New Delhi: In a significant security lapse on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, two unidentified individuals breached security protocols on Wednesday by jumping into the Lok Sabha from the visitors’ gallery. The shocking incident occurred at 1 p.m. during the House proceedings chaired by Rajendra Agarwal.
The intruders created chaos by running around the House and igniting smoke sticks, catching the participating MPs off guard. The disruption led to the adjournment of the House as the two men continued climbing tables towards the Chair. Quick action by MPs resulted in the apprehension of one of the intruders.
Rajendra Agarwal promptly announced the adjournment of the House until 2 p.m. The breach, coincidentally on the anniversary of the 2001 attack, raised concerns about the security measures in place.
DMK MP Senthilkumar reported, “Two persons jumped from the Lok Sabha visitors gallery into the Lok Sabha house while proceedings were going on during zero hours. They started advancing and rushing towards the well of the house and they lighted up smoke sticks. Security was compromised.”
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi added, “Saw two young men unleash foul-smelling yellow-colored gas from canisters inside Parliament gallery. MPs rushed to grab these men. One person was raising some slogans. This raises serious questions on another aspect of the new Parliament building – security.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other parliamentarians paid tributes to the security personnel who lost their lives in the 2001 Parliament attack.
Expressing surprise at the security breach, many MPs noted that two unidentified men were observed spraying some kind of gas. Both individuals have been taken into custody, and a comprehensive multi-agency interrogation is set to take place.
