Belagavi: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly assaulted, paraded naked, and tied to an electric pole in Belagavi district. The assault occurred after her son eloped with a woman who was supposed to get engaged to someone else. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has assured the assembly that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

The incident took place in New Vantamuri village, where the woman’s family, about 20 members, damaged the house of her son, who had eloped with a 20-year-old woman. The 55-year-old mother of the eloping man was dragged outside, paraded naked, and tied to an electricity pole by the family members of the woman. Twelve accused have been arrested, including the woman’s father, mother, brothers, and uncles, in connection with the incident. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the victim at the hospital and the village, expressing outrage over the incident. The eloping couple, a 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, had been in a relationship for nearly two years. The woman’s family arranged her marriage to another man, prompting the couple to run away. Efforts are underway to find the young couple to ensure their safety and prevent any extreme steps in response to the incident.

Parameshwara emphasized the need for societal change, stating that incidents like these are shameful for society. He assured protection for the young couple and their families, condemning the assault on the woman.

District in-charge minister Satish Jarkiholi and women and child development minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar visited the victim at the hospital, instructing hospital authorities to limit visits to family members for her rest and recovery.

The incident has sparked discussions about the safety of women and the fear of law and police in the state. The Home Minister pledged that the government would take stringent action against the accused and work towards preventing such incidents in the future.
