Dramatic footage of an alleged kidnapping in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, shows a man in handcuffs struggling helplessly while someone else tries to push him into a waiting car on a busy road. That was not real, though.

This incident in Noida exposed the heedless extent people will go to in order to gain influence online. Motivated by the goal to increase their social media following and likes, three young men ended up in the police net while recording a false kidnapping-themed video.’

In the now-viral video, which at first seemed to depict an actual kidnapping, friends force a young man into a car while another records the incident on camera. As soon as the video was shared on social media, both police and concerned individuals took notice of it. Three people, named as Ajit, Deepak, and Abhishek, were taken into custody by Noida’s Sector 20 police in relation to the widely shared video.

Investigations showed that the alleged kidnapping was merely a staged event planned to generate interest on social media. Bringing a car and a camera, the three set out to film a reel including kidnapping as its central theme in Sector 18.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Manish Kumar Mishra denounced the three’s actions, stating that they not only jeopardized their friend’s safety but also sparked public fear and disturbed the tranquility of a busy market.

After all, the three young people were freed on bond and given instructions not to put themselves in risk just to get likes on social media.
