On Friday night, a tremendous dust storm swept through Delhi-NCR, causing chaos throughout the nation’s capital. The storm uprooted trees, injuring about six people and killing at least two, according to reports.

Due to an abrupt change in the weather, this also resulted in the diversion of over nine flights, two of which were Air India flights that were scheduled to arrive in Delhi but ended up in Jaipur.

Delhi police was flooded with phone calls from across the city where they received over 200 calls for power-related disruptions in the city, over 150 calls for tree uprooting related incidents and more than 50 calls for damages concerning the buildings.

The national capital was being swept by gusts of wind reaching speeds of 60–70 kmph, which caused trees to rustle fiercely. There were many reports of trees falling in various locations, causing traffic congestion.

Three were injured when a massive signboard in Dwarka, Delhi, collapsed on two cars, one of which was an ambulance. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) transported the injured, which included two ambulance occupants and an auto driver, to the hospital.

Law enforcement and other rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. A crane was used to remove the debris.

According to the meteorological service, the sudden dust storm was caused by a disturbance in the west. The dust storm gave Delhi’s oppressively high temperatures and humidity a much-needed break.

The MeT department had predicted the possibility of thunderstorms and dust storms on Friday, along with sporadic areas of light rain and hail.

The minimum and lowest temperatures on Saturday are likely to be 29 and 39 degrees Celsius, respectively. A high chance of rain over the weekend has also been forecast by the department.
