New Delhi: A pioneering Indian startup has ingeniously repurposed advanced spy and surveillance satellite technology to tackle a seasonal scourge: mosquitoes. With summers and monsoons bringing forth an onslaught of these pesky insects, traditional methods of surveillance have proven inadequate. Enter Sisir Radar, a Kolkata-based space technology firm, which has harnessed cutting-edge hyper-spectral imaging technology to identify mosquito breeding grounds.

Mosquitoes, notorious for breeding in water, often elude detection by conventional satellite and drone surveillance. However, Sisir Radar’s custom-built cameras, mounted on drones, have revolutionized this approach. By employing hyper-spectral imaging, the startup can now discern the presence of mosquito larvae in containers and water bodies.

In a groundbreaking announcement, Sisir Radar unveiled its initial findings, demonstrating the efficacy of hyperspectral imaging in identifying mosquito breeding sites. By conducting experiments with both clean and larvae-infested water samples, the startup showcased the technology’s capability to distinguish between the two. Tapan Misra, renowned as the architect of India’s spy satellite program and the founder of Sisir Radar, emphasized the significance of this innovation. He highlighted the indiscriminate nature of current insecticide spraying methods, which not only harm aquatic ecosystems but also fail to effectively combat mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. With an estimated 250 million people affected globally by such diseases, Misra stressed the urgency of adopting more targeted and efficient strategies.

Misra’s journey from leading India’s space applications center to founding Sisir Radar exemplifies the transformative potential of scientific expertise in addressing societal challenges. His philosophy of “capturing the invisible” now extends beyond the realm of espionage to benefit public health and environmental conservation.
