New Delhi: The Christian community in Delhi on Thursday took out a protest march against attacks on churches. At least 200 people, including an Aam Aadmi Party leader, were detained while marching towards Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence here demanding action against the continuous attacks on Delhi churches, police said.

Aam Admi Party (AAP) spokesperson Raghav Chadha who was trying to get in contact with a priest on the protest site was pushed aside and forced to take seat on one of the buses meant to arrest protestors.  The peaceful protestors present were pushed back inside the Cathedral campus with police nearly outnumbering them. A long wall of police men and women stood guard with lathis. Not even reporters were allowed anywhere near the crowd.

The crowd which was heard crying out “we want justice’ included men, women, youth and even school children.

School kids from the Presentation Convent said “we will protest if we are attacked”. On asked what brings her to the site, Reuchin Anthony, a youth from Jesus and Mary College claimed “my faith in Jesus”

Hours after the Christian groups staged a huge protest outside the Sacred Heart Cathedral in the heart of the capital on Thursday over alleged repeated attacks on churches by “anti-socials”, BJP’s national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao assured swift police action on the violence against the minority community.

“We condemn attacks on religious institutions, and Delhi Police will certainly look into it,” Rao said in a twitter message. “You cannot differentiate between thefts in temples and thefts in church,” he said.

However, cautioning the people, he also added that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is trying to communalise the elections and get voters of particular community on their side.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police have imposed section 144 outside Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s house to prevent the protestors from reaching his residence.
