Thiruvananthapuram: Brahmashree Narayana Guru was a great social reformer who taught the world the matra of ‘One Caste, One Religion and One God’. He fought against social discrimination and brought about a change in the society. His contributions as a thinker and a reformer are such that a large section of people living in Kerala and coastal belt of Karnataka revere and worship him as a God. Surprisingly despite this, all that ICSE thought befitting to teach students is that Shree Narayana Guru was a mere leader of a ‘particular community!
Several instances of distorted and misleading information making way into the school textbooks have come to light from time to time and the latest is about Brahmashree Narayana Guru’s details in ISCE eighth standard textbook.
With this, Kerala State BJP Chief Kummanam Rajashekaran has written to Union HRD Minister PRakash Javdekar to rectify the mistake and withdraw the controversial part from the chapter named ‘Effective History and Civic’.
In the letter Rajashekaran said that as a reformer, the Guru had led a reformation movement in Kerala and rejected casteism, promoted new values of freedom and spiritual equality.
“The Guru always stressed the need for spiritual and social uplift of the downtrodden by their own efforts. He emphasised on education. He was a tireless crusader of social equality,” the letter said.
