Was Swiss baker from Mysuru an international drug trafficker?

Bengaluru: A Swiss national who lived in genteel Mysuru for many years is being hunted down by the law enforcement agencies of Switzerland and India for drug trafficking and money-laundering across Indian metros.

Kilcher Werner, 59, also allegdly supplied drugs to star hotels of Mumbai and Delhi and was found owning properties under fictitious names in Karnataka and other states.

Werner, 59, from Winkel in Nunningen Municipality in Switzerland is being sought by the Swiss Federal Criminal Police in connection with cases of drug trafficking and money laundering both in Switzerland and India.

Sources in Central Bureau of Investigation told this reporter that Kilcher might be involved in other such cases and they want his custody to find the drug trafficking routes to Indian cities from abroad.

Werner is now on the run. The CBI has issued notices to all state police and cautioned his involvement in further cases of hawala transaction and drug supplying.

CBI’s case against Werner is quite sensational. According to India’s premier investigation agency, Werner, who operated bakeries in Mysore, Karnataka and Kovalam in Kerala, was supplying banned drugs including heroin, opium and marijuana to his VIP customers, both Indians and foreigners.

The Swiss Federal Criminal police have requested Indian investigators for details on any property and bank accounts owned by Werner.

This issue has been brought up before the Interpol- StAR focal points platform, where both India and Switzerland come under. So, now the Interpol has issued alerts to its contact agency in India, CBI.

CBI is also looking at Werner’s local links including his connections with drug peddlers in Bengaluru and other cities.

Werner lived in India for a long period and was employed with the Indian branch of Josef and Marc Swiss Bakers Pvt Ltd situated in the Industrial Area in Hebbal, Mysore.

According to Swiss Federal Criminal Police, the company produces brown bread mix and the product is sold to various hotels including Southern Star in Mysore, Leela Palace, Taj Vivanta and Le Meridien in Bengaluru and Novotel near Juhu beach in Mumbai.

 

Werner is suspected of selling contraband drugs embedding them bakery items, a CBI officer said.

Werner was Managing Director of Josef and Marc Swiss Bakers Pvt Ltd in India, but left it in August 2011. During his stint as MD of the company, he lived in Mysore, renting a rented house near Doctors’ Corner at Gokulam.

Later, he went to Kerala and lived on Kovalam beach, where he opened a bakery.

Josef and Marc Swiss Bakers Pvt Ltd imported bakery ingredients like Sugrano 542, 5200, enzymes, Malt Flove, EBC100 from Switzerland to Mysore by DHL cargo company and sold its products through Safe Express Company in Mysore. It operated an account in HSBC bank on Kalidasa Road, Mysore.

The company was closed in 2013 and all the materials and inventory was purchased by Tahir Shaikh of Faridabad, Delhi, and another person, who is the owner of some Handicrafts. The latter is now known to be Werner’s friend.

CBI is investigating Werner’s links with inter-state drug traffickers in Delhi, Mumbai , Chennai and Kerala, where he is suspected to have supplied drugs to hotels and tourist resorts.

Werner is also wanted in connection with money laundering, as police suspect him to be a hawala agent. Sources said he has strong links with hawala traders and drug traffickers. CBI is also looking at the possibility of Werner having underworld connections.
