SJEC holds contests for DK Students to mark Nat’l Science Day

Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) AICTE IDEA Lab in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering celebrated National Science Day 2023 at SJEC on Feb 28 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian Physicist Sir C V Raman in 1928, which led to his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. School Students from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were invited to the event which consisted of a Quiz and project model competition. 33 schools participated in the event consisting of 231 students and 34 teachers.

The event started with an inaugural ceremony with Dr Smitha Hegde, Deputy Director and Professor at Nitte Centre for Science Education and Research in Mangalore being the chief guest. Rajalakshmi K, Principal and DDPI Mangalore, Sumith Rao, Proprietor of M/s. Olympus Refrigeration and Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal, SJEC were the guests of honour for the program. Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, In charge Director, SJEC presided over the function. Dr Shreeranga Bhat, HOD-Department of Mechanical Engineering and Smitha D’Souza, convener of the program were the other dignitaries present on the dais.

After the Inaugural Ceremony, three keynote addresses were organized. Firstly, Dr Smitha Hegde spoke on the potential of right questioning as well as asking rich questions and also mentioned enjoying failure equally as we enjoy victory. She insisted the students on using the capacity of the human mind to convert whatever they think into reality. Sumith Rao spoke about different career options available after schooling. He also told that individuals should be passionate about their work and always question and keep their scientific temper burning inside. Final keynote address speaker Dr Vincent Crasta spoke about exploring the opportunities around and developing aptitude skills required for getting into to any career. He gave more insights on career opportunities and insisted students on setting goals for the future well in advance.

After the keynote addresses the elimination round of quizzes was conducted in Kalam Hall. The other students were taken on a campus visit to key places like the SAE club, ARC club, Aero club etc.

A brief valedictory program was organized in Kalam hall. Students and teachers gave brief feedback on the event. Prizes were distributed to the prize winners of the competition held. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rolvin D’silva, Convener of the Program.
