Mangaluru: A training workshop of the traditional Ghumat percussion instrument was started by the Konkani Department of Milagres College on January 21, in association with the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy (KKSA) at the college auditorium. The workshop will be held till February 9.
The programme was inaugurated by the principal of the college, Rev. Fr. Michael L. Santhumayor, member of the KKSA Santhosh Shenoy, Divo weekly editor Naveen Alvares, renowned musician Joel Pereira and assistant coordinator Neslin D’Souza, by lighting of a traditional lamp.
Joel Pereira explained the importance of traditional instruments and our identity hidden in these instruments. He told the students not to cut their bond with traditional instruments. Santhosh Shenoy urged the students to take the full benefit of this course. Naveen Kulshekar spoke about the life of our ancestors and the traditional instruments attached to their lives.
The students will perform Ghumat songs on February 9 under the guidance of Joel Pereira.
Ivin D’Souza compeered the programme. Fr. Michael Santhumayor welcomed the gathering. Ashwin Fernandes delivered the vote of thanks.
