Los Angeles: It is now confirmed that the character named ‘Apu Nahasapeemapetilon’ will be removed from from the sitcom series ‘The Simpsons.’
Confirming it to a review website, producer Adi Shankar said that the production team had decided to drop the character from the series.
He said that it was really a sad moment to have dropped the character. He said that he had viewed multiple sources on the decisions that were taken.
The controversy was that the character Apu was portrayed in such a way that it was hurting the sentiments of Indians and Asian counterparts, through racial discrimination.
Adi Shankar said that the character will be written out completely to avoid any further complications, as though till now no big deal was made out of it.
He said that if a show is bound to make a commentary on culture and if one is too afraid to comment on one’s culture, then the show is said to be a coward’s act.
The controversy is said to have begun when the episode titled “No Good Read Goes Unpunished” was out, which depicted Apu as a stereotypical Indian immigrant in the United States.
