Miami: A Vegan customer of the fast-food chain Burger King filed a class-action suit against the company for cooking its meatless “Impossible” Whoppers and its traditional meat burgers on the same grill.
Phillip Williams, who bought an Impossible Whopper (a plant-based alternative to the regular Whopper) at an Atlanta drive-through, said that he would not have paid a premium price if he knew that his burger would be covered in “meat by-products”.
In the lawsuit filed in the Miami federal court, the complainant has sought damages for all US purchases of the Impossible Whopper and an injunction requiring the fast-food chain to disclose that the vegan and regular burgers are cooked on the same grills.
Declining to comment on the incident, Burger said that they do not discuss pending lawsuits.
Its website describes the Impossible Burger as “100% Whopper, 0% Beef,” and adds that “for guests looking for a meat-free option, a non-broiler method of preparation is available upon request.”
Williams’ lawyer also did not immediately comment on the issue.
Impossible Foods Inc, which helped create the Impossible Whopper, has clarified that the product was designed for meat eaters who want to consume less animal protein and not specifically for vegans or vegetarians.
In an interview, Impossible Foods Inc head of sales Dana Worth informed that a microwave prep procedure is available in all stores for those who are strictly vegan.
