Dr. David Marjot, aged 95, recently made history at Kingston University by becoming its oldest graduate. Despite his age, the retired psychiatrist from Surrey has shown no signs of slowing down. He achieved this remarkable feat by earning a Master of Arts degree in Modern European Philosophy, a subject he pursued to gain deeper insights into its application within the ever-evolving field of psychiatry.
Remarkably, Dr. Marjot returned to academic pursuits 72 years after initially qualifying as a doctor. His decision stemmed from the profound changes he observed within the psychiatry industry in the UK, prompting him to seek a better understanding of philosophy and its relevance to modern professional practice.
Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Marjot offered advice to those contemplating a return to education after decades away. “It is a bit of a gamble, but the main thing is if you’re interested then go for it,” he emphasized. Despite acknowledging the challenges, such as a less sharp memory, he expressed gratitude for the support of exceptional educators and highlighted the enriching experience.
Tragically, Dr. Marjot had lost his wife after 65 years of marriage prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pursuit of his MA served as a meaningful endeavor to keep his mind engaged during this difficult period.
With his recent achievement, Dr. Marjot joins the ranks of the UK’s oldest-ever graduates, standing alongside Archie White, who earned his degree from the University of Brighton at the age of 96 in 2021. Undeterred by his age, Dr. Marjot is now considering embarking on a part-time doctorate program, setting his sights on completing it at the age of 102—a testament to his unwavering determination and thirst for knowledge.
