Last month, an odd incident happened in Naples, Florida. A home’s roof was crashed by a cylindrical object, leaving the homeowner shaken but thankfully unharmed.

NASA’s confirmation on Monday that the object was a piece of debris from the International Space Station (ISS) cleared up the mystery. It was a metal bracket that held outdated batteries on a pallet that was thrown away from the station in 2021. This specific pallet piece survived the flaming re-entry, even though the majority of the pallet was supposed to burn up in the atmosphere.

The object, weighing only 1.6 pounds and measuring about 4 inches tall, caused some damage to the home’s roof and floor. Homeowner Alejandro Otero, who was on vacation at the time, expressed his disbelief at the incident but was grateful no one was hurt.

“It was a tremendous sound. It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all,” said Alejandro Otero.
