New Delhi: Pakistan on Thursday carried out strikes against “terrorist hideouts” in Iran, a day after warning Tehran of “serious consequences” over its attack on the Balochi group Jaish al-Adl’s headquarters in its territory.

“Several terrorists” were killed during the intelligence-based operation codenamed, “Marg Bar Sarmachar”, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said.

Iranian media reported that nine people including four children were killed in the attack.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran targeted two bases of Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan’s Balochistan province with missiles and drones.

Pakistan denounced Iran’s “violation of its airspace” and forewarned its neighbor that such actions may have “serious consequences”.

“Iran violated international law and the goals and tenets of the United Nations Charter last night with its unwarranted and flagrant invasion of Pakistan’s sovereignty. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared on Wednesday that “this illegal act has no justification whatsoever and is completely unacceptable.”

The Ministry stated that Pakistan will not hesitate to respond to this “illegal act” and that Iran will bear “squarely” the responsibility for any fallout.

“The Iranian government has received this message from us. We have also advised them that Pakistan has chosen to remove its ambassador from Iran and that the Iranian ambassador to Pakistan, who is presently in Iran, might not be coming back for the foreseeable future. We have also decided to halt any high-level visits between Pakistan and Iran that were scheduled or currently underway, the spokesperson continued.

Forming in 2012, Jaish al-Adl is a terrorist organization that Iran has placed on its blacklist. In the past few years, the group has carried out multiple attacks on Iranian territory.

Amid the Middle East conflict between Israel and Hamas and an increase in attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, Iran launched an attack on Pakistani territory, and Islamabad retaliated.
