Pentagon :President Barack Obama has said the US should take military action following the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.
He told the American people that after careful deliberation, he was convinced Of the need for action, and said the US was prepared to strike whenever we choose.
However, he has formally requested authorisation from Congress before any use of force,effectively ruling out any strike before members return on September 9.
Earlier, a Syrian official said the country was braced for an attack at any moment, while prime minister Wael al Halqi declared, “The army is fully ready, its finger on the trigger, to face any challenge or scenario they want to carry out.”
Mr Obama described the alleged attack in Damascus earlier this month, in which hundreds of people are believed to have been massacred by Bashar al Assads regime, as the worst chemical weapons attack of the 21st century and an assault on human dignity.
