Indiana: An Indian student studying at Purdue University who had been reported missing since Sunday has tragically been confirmed dead, according to the Tippecanoe County Coroner.
Neel Acharya, the deceased student, was found on Purdue’s campus on Sunday morning after authorities responded to a call regarding a possible dead body.
The news of Neel’s disappearance was initially shared by his mother, Gaury Acharya, in a post on social media platform X, where she appealed for any information regarding his whereabouts. The Consulate General of India in Chicago responded to her plea, assuring assistance and support to the family and stating that they were in contact with Purdue University authorities.
In an email addressed to the university’s computer science department, interim CS head Chris Clifton confirmed Neel Acharya’s death to students and faculty members.
This unfortunate incident follows another recent tragedy involving an Indian student in the United States. In Lithonia, Georgia, another Indian student was brutally killed by a homeless man inside a store. Although the exact date of this incident couldn’t be verified, a video of the attack circulated on social media. Authorities promptly responded to the evidence and made arrests in connection with the case.
The mortal remains of the victim from Georgia were repatriated to their family in India on January 24th. Both incidents underscore the importance of safety measures and support systems for international students studying abroad.
