Iran: On Wednesday, a tragic incident unfolded in southern Iran, as twin bomb blasts claimed the lives of at least 91 individuals. The victims were part of a gathering commemorating the fourth anniversary of the death of former Revolutionary Guards chief Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.
The devastating attack occurred during a memorial ceremony near the tomb of Qasem Soleimani. A video circulating online captures the moment one of the bombs detonated. The footage reveals a bustling street, with a bus making a slow turn, when suddenly a massive blast erupts in the background, shrouding the area in dust and smoke.
This incident marks the deadliest attack in Iran since 1978, surpassing the tragedy in Abadan, where arson in a cinema claimed over 370 lives.
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, stating that two of its members activated explosive belts amid a large gathering near the grave of their leader. Iranian authorities announced on Friday that one of the suicide bombers was of Tajik nationality, while the identity of the second attacker remains under investigation. In response to the attack, at least 11 suspects have been apprehended across six Iranian provinces, according to the Ministry.
