Washington : An Indian-American executive tragically passed away earlier this week, succumbing to life-threatening injuries sustained during a altercation outside a restaurant in Washington.

Vivek Taneja, a Virginia native, was involved in a confrontation with the suspect at two affiliated Japanese eateries on February 2, according to a police report. The altercation escalated, resulting in Taneja being knocked to the ground, where he struck his head on the pavement, as reported by The Washington Post citing police documentation.

This incident adds to a concerning trend of attacks and fatalities involving individuals of Indian descent in the United States. Taneja, aged 41, left the establishments around 2 am, and the altercation spilled onto a nearby street. Details of the dispute remain undisclosed by authorities. Upon police arrival, Taneja was found unconscious with severe injuries and rushed to a hospital, where he later passed away on Wednesday.

The suspect, captured on CCTV, remains unidentified, prompting law enforcement to offer a $25,000 reward for information leading to their arrest and conviction.

In another distressing incident, an Indian student was assaulted during a robbery in Chicago, leaving him with visible injuries. Syed Mazahir Ali, whose family resides in Hyderabad, was captured on video pleading for assistance after the attack.

Tragically, several Indian-origin students have lost their lives in separate incidents this year. Sameer Kamath, a student at Purdue University, was discovered deceased in a nature reserve, the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a 19-year-old student, was also found dead, though authorities ruled out foul play. Neel Acharya was discovered deceased on the Purdue University campus shortly after being reported missing. Additionally, Vivek Saini was fatally assaulted by a homeless individual in Georgia, while Akul Dhawan was found deceased outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Following these tragedies, Eric Garcetti, the US envoy to India, reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian students in the United States. He expressed condolences, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to providing a secure environment for international students.
